On-line dating and the Law

asian online datingOver the last two or three years, on-line dating sites have been put under increasing pressure, by western nations such as the United States of America and Great Britain. This is partly fuelled by the threat presented to users who do not take the required precautions when meeting somebody who, for all intent and purpose, is a complete stranger, for the first time. Although this is the primary concern, there are several sub-issues that are also being criticised.

In 2006, one of the largest on-line dating sites was accused of selling the contact details of registered users; this is in breach of several key pieces of western legislature, such as the Data Protection Act in the UK. The problem is compounded when the question of jurisdiction is raised, a website is deemed to be a legal entity of the nation that its controlling body is registered in, therefore, any illegal activity must be judged against the laws of the host country. This makes perusing and persecuting such websites almost impossible, as they will traditionally register their holding company in one of the countries around the globe that have significantly more lax civil and criminal laws. Until such time as an international “law of the internet” is established, if ever, these problems will continue to arise.
